When Is My MOT Due?
If you’re not sure when your MOT is due, you’re not alone – and thankfully it’s easy to check.
Your MOT is usually due every year on the same date, unless you had it tested early. Driving without a valid MOT can lead to fines, points, and insurance issues, so it’s worth knowing exactly where you stand.

How to Check When Your MOT Is Due
The quickest way to check your MOT expiry date is using the official DVLA MOT checker.
All you need is your vehicle registration number.
The checker will show:
Your MOT expiry date
Whether your MOT is valid
Your vehicle’s MOT history
(We recommend checking directly with the DVLA – it’s free, accurate, and up to date.)
Can I Have My MOT Done Early?
Yes – and in many cases, it’s a smart move.
You can have your MOT carried out up to one month (minus a day) before it expires and keep the same renewal date for the following year.
Example:
If your MOT expires on 20 April, you can test it from 21 March and still renew to 20 April next year.
This helps you:
Avoid last-minute panic
Keep your car legal
Fit the test around your schedule
What Happens If My MOT Has Expired?
If your MOT has expired:
You cannot legally drive the vehicle
You may receive a fine of up to £1,000
Your insurance could be invalid
The only exception is driving directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment.
If you’re unsure or think it’s expired – don’t guess. Check it, then book it.

This is a good option if you want to avoid last-minute bookings.
Does an early MOT change my renewal date?
No — as long as the test is done within one month minus a day of your expiry date.
